Visiting your youth twice a month and touching base by text or call once a week. -What if I am uncertain about my capacity to mentor right now, but I am still interested? You aren’t making a commitment by expressing interest or even attending the training! — if I am busy in this season, should I still get my training started? Absolutely! Just because you go through the training and are fully onboarded, doesn’t mean you will even be paired right away. Mentors have had to wait sometimes months or more to be paired, but getting the onboarding process started will help you be ready whenever you are at the capacity to mentor!

Without you, we lose 💛 “You are the only thing they have.” I never expected to hear those words from two FBI agents sitting in my office. A supervisor was making a visit to Kentucky, and the Louisville agent wanted to make sure they visited one of their local partners- Safe Passage. “I wish we had something like this everywhere”, said the supervisor. They had stopped by to hear updates on the victims they had referred to our mentorship program. One year ago, we showed up to what the agent described as her “worst case ever”. When we began working with this young girl, she told us that she liked her life. She liked the alcohol, partying, drugs, men, and sex for money. When your son, daughter, niece, nephew, or grandchild has been trafficked- would you know? Victims describe being confused. “I didn’t know what was happening.” Please help us to reach these youth through prevention and mentorship services. We have youth who are finding their voices and telling their stories, through media- poems- writing- they are sharing their stories about what happened. It was human trafficking- Actually- it was child trafficking. ❌❌❌❌❌ We are working to prevent and end child trafficking. Today, we onboarded a new mentor / mentee match to support a youth survivor! And in the midst of it all, they don’t have any real friends. Can you imagine having deep trauma … and no friends, no support system? She also spent some time working for our dear partner, Maryhurst, where many of our youth pass through. Alex will assist in mentoring our youth. Alex’s unique background with pastoral ministry and hands on experience serving victims of human trafficking makes her the perfect fit for our youth. She also has a heart of gold and a joyful, contagious spirit. Photos from a case this week. 📸 She had a backpack of condoms, heroine, meth, and needles. But no clothes, no food, and no essentials. This 18 year old princess found her way to us. She aged out of foster care and found herself homeless and couch surfing. This led her to a place where her trafficker encountered her. He monopolized on her needs, on her broken heart, and her vulnerability. 💔 This kid is beautiful, savvy, and HILARIOUS. She loves cats, seafood and baby yoda. 🦞 We are working to get her the support and help she needs to be safe and make a way in life. 🏠🖤 We provided for her meals this week, we worked her case until we found a place for her to stay, then we drove her to a safe haven that is two hours away from her trafficker. 🚗 It costs roughly $200 a week to serve one youth, and these crisis cases can quickly triple our costs. “She’s down that trail. At least that’s where I dropped her off last. She called for help... again. What do you do when she’s 18 years old, addicted to drugs, and being trafficked? What do you do when she says she will be ready at 8am but you know she really won’t be there. You show up. She had some of the worst bruising I had seen on anyone. They had beaten her up and injected her with an unknown drug. They’ve raped her repeatedly. Drugs were too persistent. Drugs don’t care if you’re a rich man or poor man. A king’s daughter, a preacher’s daughter, the clerk’s daughter, or a foster daughter. Drugs don’t care if you score a big trick worth hundreds or if you sleep with hundreds just to get a hit. Eventually, neither do you. I remember sleeping with 12 people a day just to stay high. I HAD to get high in order to get through the last 11 to get to the 12th ... only to repeat it all over again for 7-8-9 days in a row. I don’t want that for her. Even though I knew she wouldn’t be here, I wanted to honor God by showing up. It’s all spiritual, and sometimes how you fight the battle is simply showing up. I drove, sat, drove, sat here for a solid two hours. I hate pulling away. It feels like failure. It’s hard carrying other people’s burdens. She’s only 18. It is not her fault.” @jenniferfayebeagle

Safe passage received a phone call from a mom crying out for help because her daughter had run away from home. It was the third time she had done so. Though her daughter was home right then, they did not know exactly how long it was going to be before she ran away again. When I arrived, I assessed the situation... my heart broke. I saw a beautiful girl that was so very young, 11 years old, yet so mature for her age. I saw a brokenness in her that I could identify with so strongly. She has no idea why she runs away. She enjoys the “high” that comes from it is all she knows. I started digging deeper. It didn’t take long at all for her to say she was “messed with” from a close family member. Her parents were newly divorced and she was confused, so she trusted him to love and accept her but instead, he raped her. Repeatedly. She was only four the first time it happened. Though the situation was dealt with in a legal aspect, the residual trauma effects lingered deeply. Trauma does not heal because the perp got caught. It only starts to heal with an understanding of PTSD and the Brain. There are four stages of PTSD: Impact, Denial, Short Term Recovery, Long Term Recovery. This princess was still in the "Impact" stage of grief. She never had the opportunity to get any healing let alone to understand that this is the root of why she sells her nudes on social media. She is unknowingly seeking love and attention. Why? This is how her abuser taught her she will receive love. He told her he loved her. He told her she was beautiful. He bought her toys and candy to “prove” he loved her. Now as a teenager, the situation is the same. Only escalated. Strangers say they love her. They tell her she is beautiful. She received rewards from these people on Snapchat and TikTok. Except the items have grown to an iPhone or tablet and some new clothes. We understand how childhood abuse evolved into exploitation in her teens... But for her, it takes time to see it. For these kids, it is a long journey before they connect their risky behaviors to childhood trauma. It takes time .. Thanks to your support, we have that time.

We wrapped up Child Abuse Prevention Month by reaching high school students with our sexual abuse and human trafficking prevention program. One boy said, "I thought trafficking was just kidnapping. I didn't know it was so much more than that." The room echoed, "Yea, same, I didn't know." We asked them, "What did you learn?" "That it's layered." "It can be confusing for the victims AND bystanders." "Traffickers play a long game." "Traffickers use drugs and they manipulate your feelings." "Victims don't leave because they are scared." "There might be people on Pornhub who are trapped and trafficked." "I learned about the struggles a victim has. Like hopelessness, fear and shame." Does trafficking happen AT the Derby? Sometimes. But more often, it SURROUNDS the Derby. On a normal year, (not counting the pandemic) the crowd amasses to more than 150,000 people. Many of whom are tourists from around the world. So does the trafficking happen at the bidding booth? The bar? Or the tail gating? Actually, it usually happens after the event. It begins on the phone. When friends have been drinking, and they begin to plan their night to continue the drunken party, they search Craigslist and Backpage for prostitutes to join their evening. This is where it happens. It's happening in hotels. It's happening in apartments. It's happening in homes. It's happening in Air BnBs. It's happening in cars. Trafficking surrounds the Derby. It follows the drunkenness, drugs, and partying. Sometimes you see negotiations and sales happening during the event... But most trafficking begins on the phone and occurs in the hours that follow. Piper is a 14-year-old, eight-grader, who is very popular in her school. Everyone knows her name. One day, she was walking home from school, when an older gentleman drove by and whistled at her. He turned around at the corner to come talk to her. “You need a ride home,” asked the man. “I don’t even know your name,” Piper said. “Tony,” he said. They talked for a few minutes and he convinced Piper that he was safe, so she got in the car. He offered her to smoke some weed. What she didn’t know is the blunt was laced with something, and she found herself feeling very drowsy. Tony leaned over and started kissing her. She tried to pull away, but he was much stronger than she was. A few minutes went by, and Piper was not able to break free from Tony so she gave in. He raped her. Then he convinced Piper that he loved her. Even as outgoing as Piper is, she is very broken inside because she was molested as a child and the trauma was never dealt with properly. She always masked her pain for laughter and lots of makeup. Piper tried to “break up” with Tony, but because he knew where she lived, he would show up at all hours through the night. He threatened her many times with videos that he had been recording without her knowledge if she didn’t let him in. He was more than happy to prove it to her. It seemed as if nothing would work for Piper to get away from him. He had too much “dirt” on her. Until one day when he had picked her up from school. On the way to a secluded area for sex, Tony got pulled over. He threatened Piper and told her to be quiet, but the officer discerned something was wrong. Tony had said he was Piper’s dad, but she couldn’t answer any of the questions about him. The officer took Tony to jail and got Piper to a safe place. That’s when we were called. We have been working with Piper’s past molestation and now what she has walked through. Trafficking often evolves slowly, overtime. Ella is a funny and outgoing 15 year old that is so full of life. She spends a lot of time on social media. She didn’t know one post would open the door to her being targeted and groomed by a trafficker. When her dad moved into a new house, she posted that she was alone in the new home. Brandt, a trafficker, scrolled onto her post and quickly swooped in. He told Ella how pretty her home was. Then he said, "But you are the prettiest thing I've ever seen." It took a couple of months of very persuasive messages going back and forth, but Ella finally agreed to meet Brandt at the park. When Ella got in his car, he violently raped her then threatened that he would tell her dad and also share her photos if she didn’t comply with his wishes. Ella was so scared that she did whatever he asked. Within a matter of weeks, he was controlling her every move. He sold her images and videos, and he sold her to buyers. When a social worker finally stepped into the situation, she called us. Today, we are working with Ella each and every week. We process through the trauma and confusion. We talk through the pain and disappointment. And now, we talk through her goals and dreams over a cup of queso and a bowl of ice cream. We provide survivor mentorship to trafficked and at risk youth This includes safety planning and pastoral counseling. This is weekly one-on-one support to vulnerable youth. We also provide peer support to the families who are faithfully walking alongside their youth. What does it look like? It looks like walks in the park. Hours on the swing set. Calories wasted on ice-cream and chicken fingers. Life changing conversations in their living room. Powerful breakthroughs In the car. Tears shed on the Starbucks patio. A happy smile at the horse farm. These are life-changing moments. Kids are unpacking years and layers of trauma with their survivor mentor. But they are making good memories in the process.
